Particularly following the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco, seismic codes introduced a new generation of designing structures to resist earthquakes. Structural engineers were at the forefront of those developments, fighting for buildings that would withstand all kinds of loads and stresses.

The Role of Structural Engineers

Structural Engineers are at the forefront of applying and developing building codes and standards. Their experience and expertise are what guarantee that the buildings comply but are performance- and safety-optimized. As the codes grow in complexity and size at a pace like no other, the role of structural engineers becomes much more important in doing justice to those aspects. Learning has to be ongoing in today’s learning society, which has everything revolved around sustainability and resiliency. New materials and new construction methodologies — for example, advanced composite applications and modular construction — call for new ways of thinking about code compliance.

Future Directions

The future for building codes and standards in the arena of structural engineering is, therefore, very bright due to the movement toward sustainability, resilience, and adaptability. Climate change and all its related problems are, by necessity, driving the quest for new codes to handle the impacts of severe weather events that will prevail and become more familiar with altered climate conditions. It will be the structural engineers who will ensure that our built environment, into the future, is ready for the challenges that lie ahead.
